This was probably an easy choice. Too easy. I mean, I’ve watched quite a few James Bond movies over the years, and definitely the most recent ones. I was hesitant at first to accept Daniel Craig as the new 007, until I saw Casino Royale– and loved it. But, I grew up watching Pierce Brosnan in that role.
It’s true. Brosnan made an amazing Bond. But, off-screen, he’s also an amazing hero. Indeed, the “Mamma Mia!” star has a long history of helping out the charities. A staunch environmentalist, he has supported the Natural Resources Defense Council with various advocacy campaigns. He is a member of Oceana’s Ocean Council. Brosnan and wife Keely Shaye donated $100,000 to replace playground equipment at a school near their home in Hawaii.
In 1997, the actor received an Environmental Leadership Award from then-Green Cross International president and former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev. And, Brosnan has been a spokesperson for Lee National Denim Day, which raises funds for breast cancer.
Pierce recently participated in the CNN Heroes tribute on Thanksgiving night, and he also lends a hand to children’s charities. He is quoted as saying “If I hadn’t been an actor, I probably would have been a social worker.”
Forget Omega watches and Aston Martins– this is the stuff real heroes are made of!
