Day 287- Betty Nguyen

Although anchor Betty Nguyen left her post at CNN in March, she continues making her mark in the journalism industry as anchor for CBS Morning News.

Having successfully avoided poverty in her youth, Nguyen now aims to help other Vietnamese people escape hunger and destitution.

She also remains strongly committed to philanthropy. In 2000, Ms. Nguyen established a non-profit organization, Help the Hungry, with a global mission “to relieve human suffering by providing humanitarian aid to the less fortunate.”

Particularly noteworthy is Nguyen’s dedication to helping the poor people in her native country of Vietnam, which she fled with her mother in 1975 during the turmoil of the Vietnam War.

In spite of her dangerous emigration to the U.S., Betty has thrived and become a very well-respected broadcast journalist. According to Wikipedia (ever the reliable news source!), Nguyen was a member of the Zeta Tau Alpha sorority at the University of Texas at Austin.

“In 2007, the Smithsonian Institution recognized Nguyen as the first Vietnamese-American to anchor a national television news broadcast in the United States,” the Wikipedia article stated.

And, in November 2008, Nguyen was honored as one of three winner of CNN’s “My Heroes” awards.

Nguyen is a member of the Asian-American Journalists Association.

She is truly an outstanding individual, and I can’t wait to reach out to her!

Please stay tuned for Day 288 of “Holdin’ Out,” coming later today.
